We’ve talked about the applications of VR, AR, and other real-time technologies in architecture before. It’s one thing to see 2D stills of a 3D project online, but it’s entirely different when you get to experience a rendering in the format it was designed for. As many of our readers are looking to break into 3D architectural visualization, we’ve gathered this list of seven upcoming conferences where you can see emerging breakthroughs for VR and AR in architecture firsthand.

Academy Days X

Dates: October 3-5, 2019

Location: Venice, Italy

Highlights: 100% focus on Architectural Visualization (ArchViz); Workshops on developing ArchViz presentations in Unreal Engine 4 (UE4)

This event is centered entirely around ArchViz technology and educating practitioners creating ArchViz projects.   Epic Games, maker of UE4, recently became the main sponsor of this event hosted by State of Art Academy. This partnership means that there will be a significant focus on the application of UE4, a free software platform, to create immersive architecture projects.  The speakers include experts from architects to game designers who can speak to changes in the presentation of architectural project with real-time technologies.

American Institute of Architects (AIA) Conference

Dates: May 14-16, 2020

Location: Los Angeles, CA

Highlights: Unity workshops for AEC; 750+ product manufacturers; continuing education credit hours

AIA’s conference is one of the largest in the industry.  This expo serves a means to hear from the top practitioners in the field and get exposure to some of the newest technologies available. In addition to hearing from experts, Unity and other 3D developers will show how BIM data can be optimized with real-time experiences, showcase workflow improvements, and create interactive visual experiences for design presentation.

AEC Next, in collaboration with Spar 3D Expo and Conference

Dates: June 3-5, 2020

Location: Chicago, IL

Highlights: Collaborative Creation Studio; Launch Pad for start-ups and emerging technology; Unity workshops for AEC

AEC Next is a 3-day educational and networking event designed to bring together thinkers, entrepreneurs, and leaders in the AEC industry. Their goal? To share best practices and emerging technologies in the industry.  The conference aims to put companies with new technology solutions in front of industry gatekeepers and provide a forum for them to collaborate.

VRX Conference and Expo

Dates: December 12-13, 2019

Location: San Francisco, CA

Highlights: Seminar: Design & visualization: Proven ROI for the AEC industry; focus on finding new fields for start-ups

The VRX conference and XRDC (next on our list) are not strictly focused on the AEC industry, but on bringing real-time experiences into new industries, such as AEC. VRX strives to teach studios and designers about trends in the realm of immersive experiences and how they can be used to improve their business. Given its location in Silicon Valley, the conference has a significant focus on educating businesses and investors on tech start-ups working in VR that are seeking business from industries where VR is under-utilized, such as AEC.

XRDC

Dates: October 14-15, 2019

Location: San Francisco, CA

Highlights: Mixed Reality Development for Architecture; Seminar “Show Them the ROI: How AR is Transforming Decades Old Business Processes to Deliver Impressive Results”

While VRX (listed above) is aimed towards linking start-ups with new businesses and investors, XRDC is focused on educating established industry leaders through use cases of immersive technologies like VR and AR.  The conference includes leaders from companies as diverse as Airbnb, Apple, Epic Games, Google, Marvel, NASA, Oculus, Pixar, Unity, and Valve. These experts will share how real-time technology is changing their business and the new opportunities that real-time experiences can provide.  With an attendance track focused on enterprise applications, there are a wealth of opportunities to learn about how mixed reality media can benefit AEC.

Architecture of the Future

Dates: October 9-11, 2019

Location: Kyiv, Ukraine

Highlights: Day of speakers dedicated to disruptive technologies shaping the new architecture; International perspectives on AEC

Featuring a number of speakers from studios small and large, this conference provides a real deep-dive on technological advances shaping the AEC industry.  With a heavy focus on the expo side for vendors, this conference is organized like a summit. The goal is to bring together experts and leaders to talk about technological developments in AEC, featuring speakers focused on VR and the role it can play in presenting AEC projects.

Immersive Architecture Asia

2020 Dates and Location Not Yet Released

2019 Highlights: Workshops on Architectural Model Photogrammetry (AR); VR/AR experience rooms; Focus on AR, VR, MR and AEC

Founded in 2019, the 2020 dates for this conference are not yet live.  But the fact that there is a conference entirely focused on VR/AR experiences relevant to the AEC industry is extremely exciting.  We think this is a conference to follow because sessions in 2019 focused on allowing AEC and VR professionals to test hardware and software meant for architectural design.
